The Stelvio Pass (2.757 m) is the highest paved pass in Italy and the second highest in the Alps. Only the Col d’Iseran in France is 13 meters higher than the Stelvio Pass.

The climb on the northeast side with its 48 hairpins, 1.870 height meters and the view on the Ortler Mountain (3.905 m) is the most popular. The bends have numbers starting from Gomagoi (1.267 m). From bend number 22, at 2.188 m, leaving the woods behind, begins the tree-less final climb with the Stelvio Pass always in sight.

Klaus’ suggestions

  • take enough clothes with you: the weather and the temperature on top of the pass may be different from down at the start

  • begin the tour with a slow and steady pace: you may need the saved energies above 2.000 m of height

  • cycle carefully down: the asphalt from Pass Umbrail till Santa Maria Val Müstair has little grip
